Emma MacFarlane, 48, is a successful marketing freelancer and lives in Thames Ditton, Surrey, with her husband and two children, 12 and 14, and a grumpy cat and an adoring Cocker Spaniel. She completed the Foundation in Social Media Marketing to expand her social media knowledge and to offer another marketing avenue to her clients.
“I have been in the luxury hotel and travel world since leaving university with a focus on sales and marketing. I went freelance in 2002 having been made redundant and was lucky to immediately start working with several high-end travel brands. Since then I have also got married and had two children.
I find the children need me more now, after school, than they did when they were little (they are 14 and 12) so I have recently channelled my efforts into providing marketing solutions to small luxury travel professionals, many of which I have known for years and all of whom have limited time, expertise and budget to pursue the marketing role within their businesses. I do this from home within school hours and in the evenings if I have to. Social media is the biggest change to hit the marketing world and the travel industry has embraced it (but isn’t always doing it properly) hence my wish to expand my knowledge and offer another marketing avenue to my clients.
I chose the Foundation in Social Media Marketing course as I really wanted to establish what I already knew and to then expand my learning and knowledge. I wanted to be confident and secure in the fact that I am offering a knowledgeable service to my clients. A good friend completed the Diploma-level social media course last year and recommended Digital Mums to me.
Since completing the course I certainly feel much more informed and knowledgeable and it has really helped my confidence and encouraged me to continue learning. It has also helped me to competently explain to my clients what I am doing with the platforms, what I need from them and why maybe we don’t have the millions of followers they are hoping for!
I encourage anyone thinking of doing the Foundation in Social Media Marketing to do it! It is enlightening, informative, confidence building and necessary for anyone looking to manage social media for themselves or for small clients. Be the one doing it properly, not the one playing at it!”
