Maggie Roxburgh had taken redundancy from her previous role and was about to attempt to re-enter the job market when the first lockdown shelved her plans.
Despite the pressures of homeschooling her two sons, Maggie decided to use the opportunity to retrain and start a new business.
“I had taken redundancy and after a short career break I had just started job hunting when Coronavirus hit and I found myself homeschooling two boys, explains Maggie.
“I had been following Digital Mums for a while and loved what they were talking about. The thought of owning my own business and a flexible career really appealed.
“With lockdown happening I also relished the opportunity to try and take hold of the situation to do something positive for myself.”
After completing the Digital Mums’ Foundation in Social Media Marketing, Maggie signed up to do the Advanced Diploma in Social Media Marketing in September 2020.
Maggie, who lives in West London with her two sons aged 10 and 5, had spent the majority of her career in internal communications and engagement.
The gem of an idea for a business came to Maggie as she set out at the beginning of her job hunt and realised there was a huge discrepancy in how businesses communicated through digital channels.
“Some companies were using platforms like LinkedIn very well, explains Maggie. “Or would be good at promoting themselves while others would use social to do a big recruitment drive and then go silent. There was a huge difference in quality.
“I thought there could be an opportunity to help organisations with their employee experience on social and to be clear and strategic about it.”
Digital Mums give you the tools to be your own boss and thanks to them not only do I now have a very relevant and marketable skillset but I also have a business I’m really excited by.
Digital Mums helped Maggie to flesh out her idea and turn it into a viable business.
“You don’t have to have that niche or focus area at the start, that’s what’s so great about Digital Mums, said Maggie.
“By drawing on my past experience and retraining in social Digital Mums helped me to find my niche.
“The social media training is excellent but what I also found invaluable was learning about financial planning, and how to brand and market your business and the ongoing mentoring you receive.
Maggie now counts several top telecoms companies as clients and is excited to see where her new business takes her.
“I am really optimistic that I have a business for the future as in this new world we’re living in as offices are swapped for online, I feel like organisations are going to have to be even better at reaching out to people and articulating what the employee experience is like.
“Digital Mums give you the tools to be your own boss and thanks to them not only do I now have a very relevant and marketable skillset but I also have a business I’m really excited by.”
