The business benefits of flexible working for Photography for Parents

Photography for Parents provides workshops, private courses and online classes for parents to learn the art of children's photography. It was set up by mum Ania Wilk-Lawton, inspired by her own experiences of first-time parenting. She spoke to us about the company, her core belief in having a flexible approach to business and her experience working with Digital Mums.

What was it about parenthood that inspired you to start your business?

It was the experience of being a parent with a young baby, and wanting to find an environment that was stimulating and creative for me as well as being baby-friendly. With Photography for Parents we are catering for that need; bringing together parents who are all passionate about learning new creative skills and photographing their children, but at the same time being in a child-friendly environment that is focused on their families. It is really fulfilling helping mums and dads capture the beauty of their children growing up - by themselves, with their own cameras!

How do you feel about flexible working practices?

As a working parent, I understand completely that flexible working is something that's truly important - it's never easy juggling family responsibilities and work, so it's something we are proudly supporting both in terms of the service we provide for the parents who take our courses and the working environment for all involved in working at Photography for Parents.

Do you think there are any tangible business benefits to flexible working for your company?

Certainly - I am able to benefit from the skills and knowledge of people who are experts in their fields, which they wouldn't otherwise be able to provide under a more traditional rigid structure.

How important was the Digital Mums ethos of getting skilled Mums back into skilled flexible work in your decision to work with a Digital Mum?

It was a big part of the attraction of working with Digital Mums. My "Digital Mum" Corinna was able to understand the challenges of working in such an environment and also to understand the needs of our target audience who are often in the same position - trying to juggle motherhood and professional and personal interests.

What skills do you think mums in particular can bring to the role of social media manager and how have these helped your business?

Definitely mums seem to have the ability to multi-task, a flexible approach to their working hours, delivery-oriented work and, again, a really valuable understanding of the specific 'parent' market segment that we operate in.

And how was the experience of working with a Digital Mum and the Digital Mums training scheme?

I have nothing but positives to say about working with my "Digital Mum". Corinna was conscientious, a pleasure to work with, with a great work ethos and eagerness to learn. I could see that the training she was provided with was helping her grow, and take on new responsibilities and challenges really well as she progressed through the course. Her confidence in her work was also growing with each week. By the end of the campaign she had increased our Twitter impressions by 5,000% and our Facebook likes by 20% - a fantastic result!

Digital Mum Corinna Ilschner managed the social media campaign for Photography for Parents. She has now graduated and is successfully working as a Freelance Social Media Manager.
