Meet Helen Robinson, founder of Gifted Local. Helen completed our Foundation in Social Media Marketing course and is now excited about applying her learnings to grow her new business which connects people to creative businesses in their local area helping them to shop more sustainably.
I’m based in North London and have three young kids (6 years, 3 years and 9 months). I absolutely love my life but there is only one word I use to describe what it’s like having 3 kids and that’s ‘relentless’.
I got made redundant from my International Marketing job last year and have been on maternity leave since then but I’ve been itching to do something else other than run about after my kids all day.
I had a bit of a lightbulb moment last Christmas when I was trying to do my Christmas shopping. I’m an online shopper - as that suits my lifestyle while juggling young kids - but I’m also becoming more conscious about shopping in a more sustainable and ethical way. I wanted to support local businesses but couldn’t find any locally made gifts online so I decided to create a site for this purpose which will launch in the next few months www.giftedlocal.com.
Although I’m from a marketing background so know quite a bit about all the different social media platforms and I’m an avid user myself, especially Instagram where I have an account I regularly post on, I didn’t feel I had the confidence to create a social media strategy for my new business which I could easily manage myself at home. I’m also extremely time poor so needed as many tricks up my sleeve to produce and curate as much content as possible. Essentially, I wanted to smash it out the park from day one so turned to Digital Mums for help!
Doing the Foundation in Social Media Marketing course has enabled me to plan my social media strategy for my new business with a lot more confidence than if I had been trying to do it on my own. On my own, there would have been a whole lot of trial and error, worry and guesswork. I’ve already had a British TV actor follow me on Twitter which was all down to what I’ve learnt from Digital Mums!
