Michelle Yeoh: Filming has begun on mysterious new “Star Trek” movie with Oscar winner

"Star Trek" fans can rejoice: filming has finally begun on the next movie in the franchise. However, it is not "Star Trek 4".

There’s a lot going on in the world of Trekkies at the moment: in addition to rare but confident updates on “Star Trek 4”, we recently received the news that “Andor” director Toby Haynes will be making a prequel film to J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” series. Due to these exciting developments, the fact that another movie is in the works may have gone under the radar.

Some time has passed since Paramount announced that there would be a movie about the secret service Section 31, simply called “Star Trek: Section 31“. The secret service has already appeared in “Star Trek: Enterprise” and “Star Trek: Discovery”, for example. With the announcement of the film, it was also confirmed that Michelle Yeoh will reprise her role from “Star Trek: Discovery” in “Star Trek: Section 31”. Before Yeoh won her well-deserved Oscar for her performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, she played the role of Philippa Georgiou from 2017 to 2021.

The Instagram account of Paramount+ has now announced that filming of “Star Trek: Section 31” has finally begun. In the course of this, it was also revealed which actors* will be seen in the film alongside Yeoh:

“Production has officially launched on ‘Star Trek: Section 31,’ an original movie event coming to Paramount+. Michelle Yeoh is joined by Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez and James Hiroyuki Liao.”

What to expect in “Star Trek: Section 31”

A press release from Paramount+ states that Phillipa “joins a secret section of Starfleet. Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she must also confront the sins of her past” (via ScreenRant). Although this already provides a rough insight into the film, the work remains a mystery: numerous questions – such as when “Star Trek: Section 31” should be placed in the chronology of the franchise – remain unanswered for the time being. In “Star Trek: Discovery”, a dying Phillipa was sent away from the 32nd century by the Guardian of Eternity (Paul Guilfoyle) to save her life. Furthermore, Phillipa was already a member of Section 31 in the 23rd century. It remains to be seen how “Star Trek: Section 31” will pick up Phillipa’s story again. Nothing more is yet known about the other roles that have now been cast.

Star Trek: Discovery” executive producer Alex Kurtzman shared his excitement about the start of filming as follows (via ScreenRant):

“And we’re off to the races! Thrilled to report principal photography has started on STAR TREK: SECTION 31. We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the ‘Trek’ universe.”

Alex Kurtzman told ScreenRant

It is not yet known when “Star Trek: Section 31” will be released. When the time comes, you can watch the film on Paramount+ or on the Paramount+ channel on Amazon Prime Video, where all other “Star Trek” works are also available to stream.
