Acting icon Jim Carrey built a truly remarkable career with comedy roles such as in “The Mask” and “Ace Ventura – An Animal Detective” as well as more serious roles such as in “The Truman Show” and “Forget Me Not!”. After 45 years in front of the camera, the now 62-year-old announced in 2022 that he would be retiring after reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik in “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”.
However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon for fans of the Canadian actor: according to Variety, Carrey is to temporarily pause his retirement to take on the role of Dr. Robotnik once again for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3″. The X-account of the “Sonic” films hinted at this in a teaser trailer for the third installment of the series, in which the villain’s distinctive cackle can be heard:
“You all thought I was gone, but I’ve just been underground. What you’ve seen from me is only a shadow of things to come…”
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 left the door open for Jim Carrey’s return
The second film ended with Dr. Robotnik seemingly falling to his death. However, in the post-credits scene, it was revealed that Dr. Robotnik’s body had not been found, leaving open the possibility of a dramatic return for Sonic’s main antagonist – which, according to Variety’s report on Carrey’s retirement break, is now likely to be put to the best possible use.
When Carrey announced his (temporary) end to acting in 2022, he left the door wide open for further appearances (via ScreenRant):
“I’m being fairly serious. It depends, if the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break. I really like my quiet life, and I really like putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life, and I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
Fortunately, the script for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” now seems to fulfill this requirement. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the first two films in the series were extremely successful at the global box office – after all, both grossed over 400 million US dollars (via Box Office Mojo). Even though Sonic is a well-known product name, Carrey’s participation probably played a large part in the commercial success of the films. “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” will certainly benefit from this as well, presumably even more so if the film really does mark Carrey’s return to the camera.
“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” does not yet have a fixed release date, but the teaser trailer confirms that the film will be released in cinemas in December. Until then, you can watch the two previous films about the blue hedgehog (again): “Sonic the Hedgehog” can be rented from Amazon Prime Video, while “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” is available to stream on Netflix.
