One thing should be clear to all fans of the teen mystery series: In “Stranger Things” season 5, we can expect a showdown that will be hard to beat in terms of suspense. Netflix audiences have been following the story of Elfie (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Will (Noah Schnapp) and co. since 2016. Filming of the new episodes has now begun. However, a lot of patience is still required before the Duffer brothers’ grand finale can be seen on the streaming service.
When will “Stranger Things” Season 5 start on Netflix?
Almost three years have passed between the third and fourth seasons of “Stranger Things“. Netflix audiences will once again have to be very patient for the upcoming and final fifth season. Filming was actually due to start in mid-2023, but the Hollywood strike by the writers’ and actors’ union caused a major disruption to this schedule. On January 8, 2024, however, production of “Stranger Things” season 5 finally got underway, as a picture reveals:
Pictured are (from left to right): Millie Bobby Brown, Noah Schnapp, David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Cara Buono, Joe Keery, Amybeth McNulty, Charlie Heaton, Brett Gelman, Maya Hawke, Natalia Dyer, Jamie Campbell Bower, Priah Ferguson, cast newcomer Linda Hamilton, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, series creators Ross and Matt Duffer, Finn Woldhard and Sadie Sink.
However, it will probably be some time before Netflix can present its loyal series fans with a fixed start date. Season 5 was originally scheduled to start in 2025. Due to the delays caused by the Hollywood strike, this date is in danger of falling through. It remains to be seen whether we can look forward to “Stranger Things” season 5 in 2025 or whether the start will have to be postponed to 2026 after all.
“Stranger Things” Season 5 on Netflix: Instead of a trailer – first image caused plenty of speculation
Just like an official start date, a first trailer will probably be a long time coming. However, the Duffer brothers, the authors of the series, have already given us a first glimpse of the fifth season of “Stranger Things” with an image. They shared a photo of the first two lines of the first script page on X (formerly Twitter):
“Darkness. The sound of cold wind. Groaning trees. And… A child’s voice. She sings a familiar song:”
This gave fans plenty of reason to speculate and theorize about the season 5 opener. You can read about them in this article:
“Stranger Things” Season 5: What the showrunners have to say about the finale
In an interview with Collider, the Duffer brothers gave their first insights into the creative process for the fifth season. The ending, especially the last twenty minutes, has already been decided. It was also very important to them to give each of the beloved characters a worthy conclusion to their development in the series:
“We want to shine the spotlight on the characters, a lot of these characters have evolved over the course of these four seasons […]. We want to make sure they all end up in a place that we feel good about.”
Season 5 of Stranger Things: What’s next?
Anyone hoping for a brief preview of season 5 in the grand finale of “Stranger Things” season 4 was unfortunately left empty-handed. All that is officially known so far is that the final season will start with a well-known song. What else fans can expect from the plot is uncertain. However, based on the cliffhanger of the last season, we can guess what might happen next.
Warning: Spoilers for “Stranger Things” season 4 follow.
Elfie (Millie Bobby Brown) and her allies must face Vecna aka One (Jamie Campbell Bower) one last time to save Hawkins from destruction. Although they were able to seriously injure him in both the Upside Down and the real world, he escaped alive. As the final scenes suggest, he already seems to be preparing for his next attack. As snow-like flakes of ash fall on Hawkins, nature rots and half the city is once again ablaze.
Vecna seems to have regained her strength and is ready for battle. How exactly the clique around Elfie and Mike will defeat the dangerous monster is not yet known. However, as these will be the last episodes, we are currently assuming that they will succeed.
At the beginning of November 2022, those responsible also revealed on the series’ X channel that the first episode will be entitled “The Crawl”:
Immediately after the announcement, some fans speculated under the post that the title could refer to a term familiar from the PC game “Dungeons & Dragons”. A “dungeon crawl” is an obstacle course through a labyrinth in which players have to defeat monsters and avoid traps, among other things (via Screenrant). Sounds very promising, because the Upside Down really has no shortage of nasty monsters.
Even before “Stranger Things” Season 5: Replenishment on the theater stage
Unfortunately, “Stranger Things” is not a never-ending story. The fifth season marks the end of the series. This is what the Duffer brothers announced in a letter to the fans:
Even before the first episodes started on Netflix, the showrunners had planned to end the series after four or five seasons. However, anyone who is already tearing up at the thought of saying goodbye to Hawkins and the Upside Down can console themselves with new projects. Because the universe of the series is to be expanded with several spin-offs. It is not yet known what exactly is behind this, but the small town and the mystical underground world have plenty of potential, which Matt and Ross Duffer will certainly exploit.
We will get our first taste of the expansion of the “Stranger Things” universe from November 17, 2023 – but away from Netflix. There will then be a prequel to the hit series on stage at London’s Phoenix Theatre, entitled “Stranger Things: The First Shadow“. Tickets are available from 20 pounds. This video gives you an insight into the mysteries of the prequel:

Argyle actor Eduardo Franco cannot be seen in the picture, but according to IMDb, he is also part of the cast. However, Franco announced in an interview that he will not be in season 5. So you shouldn’t hold out too much hope of seeing the pizza delivery man again. Instead, newcomer Linda Hamilton (“Terminator”) will step in front of the camera. However, nothing is yet known about her role. The future of Joseph Quinn is just as uncertain. Although his character Eddie Munson quickly became an audience favorite, he actually died the death of the series in season 4 by sacrificing himself for his newfound friends. But with a mystery series like “Stranger Things”, you never know.
