Zootopia 2 Release Date Confirmed: It’s Sooner Than Expected

"Zootopia" not only wowed the audience, but also the Oscar jury. Seven years after the successful film, Disney finally gives the green light for "Zootopia 2".

Good news for all fans of child-friendly crime entertainment: Judy Hopps the rabbit will soon be hopping across the big screen again to uncover new crimes in Zootopia. Seven years after the first film’s release, Disney announced that “Zootopia 2” is in the works. And that’s not all: in the same breath, the film series “Toy Story” and “Frozen” have also been extended by a further part.

When will “Zootopia 2” be released in theaters?

Disney CEO Bob Iger had some good news for fans of animated films during the first quarter results conference call (via Deadline):

“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia,” Iger said. “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”

Given the success that “Zootopia” has enjoyed for Disney, a sequel was only a matter of time: not only did the title earn over 1.025 billion US dollars (via BoxOfficeMojo), it also won an Oscar in the “Best Animated Feature Film” category in 2017. However, audiences could well have done without the seven-year wait it took to give the go-ahead for “Zootopia 2”.

As per Disney, Zootopia 2 will be released in theaters on November 26, 2025. It is confirmed to be the previously untitled Disney animated movie that was on the release schedule for that date, and is sooner than anticipated for the Zootopia sequel. This will come a year after another highly-anticipated Disney animated sequel’s theatrical release, with Moana 2 debuting in theaters on November 27, 2024.

Until “Zootopia 2” is launched, you can at least pass the time with the short film series “Zootopia+“, which can be streamed on Disney+:

Zootopia 2: Who’s in it?

Zootopia without Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde? Hard to imagine. Accordingly, we expect to see both characters again. They will hopefully be joined by the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin (“Walk the Line”) and Jason Bateman (“Arrested Development”). It remains to be seen who else will return to the big screen.

In any case, we will probably be introduced to numerous new characters, as an Entertainment Weekly interview with directors Byron Howard (“Encanto”) and Rich Moore (“Ralph Reichts”) from 2016 suggests. The foundation for this had already been laid with the first part, as many concepts had been designed that ultimately did not make it into the finished film. Therefore, new districts and characters could now be used for which there were already designs:

As the website Ziggy Knows Disney reported in April 2019, Tom Lister Jr, spokesman for the desert fox Finnick, had already confirmed in a video that he would also be in “Zootopia 2”. However, the video was deleted shortly after it was published, which is why the information should still be treated with caution.

“Zootopia 2”: What will happen next?

So far, Disney has kept quiet about a possible plot for “Zootopia 2”. However, the city still has numerous unsolved crimes in store that Judy and Nick could solve together. As in part 1, they will probably have to deal with prejudices again. Will they succeed in making Zootopia a safe place? Can they do away with clichés and break the bonds between the animals? The sequel could answer all these questions for us. However, there is one more question:

Will Nick and Hopps remain friends or will they become a couple?

It’s clear that Hopps and Nick are an integral part of “Zootopia 2”. However, it will be a challenge to determine their relationship: are they still friends or will it develop into a romantic relationship? According to the directors, the danger lies in not being able to please all viewers. Some want a clichéd Hollywood romance, others want to see an unconditional friendship. We will hopefully find out what it will ultimately come down to in “Zootopia 2”.
