Hannibal season 4 still possible after all: Mads Mikkelsen gives hope for late continuation

For years, “Hannibal” fans have been waiting for a fourth season. Although the cannibal prequel was actually canceled due to moderate ratings, there is now new hope.

At first, the prequel to “The Silence of the Lambs” was very well received by the audience. Over three years, “Hannibal” ran for three seasons with a total of 39 episodes. But the ratings threw a spanner in the works for the cannibal psychiatrist (Mads Mikkelsen): After the average of almost three million viewers had halved, US broadcaster NBC canceled the horror thriller series in June 2015 (via TVLine). But it looks like series creator Bryan Fuller (“Star Trek: Discovery”) still hasn’t come to terms with the ending. In an interview, lead actor Mads Mikkelsen (“The Rush”) revealed that Fuller has ideas for “Hannibal” season 4.

“Hannibal” season 4 is looking for a new home

In an interview with Business Insider, Mads Mikkelsen gave a hopeful update on “Hannibal” season 4. Apparently, Bryan Fuller already has ideas for a sequel:

“It’s no secret that all of us, the cast and Bryan [Fuller], want to return. It would have to happen sooner rather than later, because we’re not getting any younger, right? But the story itself can jump, there can be this time gap, that’s okay. So it’s just a matter of finding a home for it, but at the moment there is nothing concrete. Why is this the case? I don’t know. We love the series. And many other people seem to like them too. I worked with him on ‘Dust Bunny’ and felt a touch of the old days. […] Bryan has a few ideas. So I can’t really reveal anything. […] But I’m sure they (Will and Hannibal, editor’s note) somehow made it.”

Since the cancellation at the end of 2015, series creator Bryan Fuller and stars of the series have regularly emphasized that they would like to shoot a fourth season. However, these plans have not yet gone beyond pure wish. However, according to Mikkelsen’s promising statement, this could change – if a new home is found for the cannibal series.

When does Hannibal season 4 start?

Currently, there is no official confirmation of a fourth season. Accordingly, we can only speculate about when “Hannibal” could return to the screens. Since the season 3 finale will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2025, this would actually be a welcome occasion to launch the fourth season. However, as long as no broadcaster or streaming service takes on the series sequel, this will remain a wishful thinking for the time being.

Hannibal season 4: Plot – this is how it could continue

If there is a fourth season of “Hannibal”, the cliffhanger from season 3 would definitely have to be resolved. As a reminder: Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) have fallen off a cliff. According to the interview above, Mikkelsen firmly believes that they survived, but we would probably be in for a time jump. What has happened in the meantime? Were the cannibalistic serial killer and the profiler possibly in a coma? Only “Hannibal” season 4 can tell us.

As early as 2017, Fuller presented a concrete idea for the fourth season in the podcast Post Mortem (via Comingsoon.net), which Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy were enthusiastic about: Season 4 could herald the next chapter in the relationship between Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter and even address a sexual tension between the two. In addition, the character Margot Verger (Katharine Isabelle) would receive her own elaborate storyline.

Hannibal season 4: Cast – who’s in it?

According to these ideas, we should definitely expect to see the main actors Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy again as Dr. Hannibal Lecter and FBI agent Will Graham in “Hannibal” season 4. In addition, Katharine Isabelle would return as Margot Vergner. But other actors from the main cast are also likely to find their way into the new episodes. After all, actor Mikkelsen assured Business Insider that all the stars involved in “Hannibal” would like to appear in front of the camera again for “Hannibal” season 4.

Whether the famous serial killer will ultimately actually strike in new episodes can only be seen in the future.
